AI & Website Design Blog Post Title Image
This quick-read guide breaks down where AI can support your website (and where it falls short), with practical tips, a fun website “roast” prompt, and a clear reminder that great design still needs real strategy. Perfect for marketers, small business owners, or anyone DIY-ing their site and wanting to use AI the smart way.

AI is a helpful tool. But it’s not a shortcut to a site that converts.

Used well, it can speed things up and help you get unstuck. Used poorly? You’ll end up with a lot of polished-sounding content that doesn’t connect. The trick is knowing where AI helps—and where it starts to hurt.

Design Alone Won’t Cut It

Let’s be honest—plenty of websites look great… but don’t actually work.

That’s because design, on its own, isn’t enough. For a site to convert, you need the full picture: clear messaging, intentional layout, and calls to action that guide your visitors toward saying yes. We like to say Story, Style, and Strategy—because yes, alliteration is fun, but more importantly, those three things are what make a website actually work.

Pretty without purpose? That’s just decoration. And decoration doesn’t drive results.

When strategy, design, and copy all work together, that’s when your website starts working for you—not just sitting there looking nice.

Where AI Can Actually Help

When used intentionally, AI can be a super helpful tool. Here’s where it tends to shine:

  • Kickstarting copy: Blank-page syndrome is real. AI can help you brainstorm headlines, intro paragraphs, or section ideas to get you moving.
  • Planning layout: Share your goals and audience, and AI can suggest a basic page structure to guide your content and improve user experience.
  • Filling in gaps: Once you’ve nailed your tone and direction, AI can help you draft the in-between pieces faster—like service blurbs, bio intros, or FAQ answers.
  • SEO support: Use AI to help brainstorm keywords, write meta descriptions, or create alt text for images—just make sure you review and refine for accuracy.
  • Accessibility basics: AI can help simplify dense paragraphs, spot missing headings, or generate placeholder alt text. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good starting point.

Think of it as a creative assistant—not a replacement for clarity, voice, or strategy.

Pro tip: Instead of jumping straight to “write this for me,” ask your AI tool to ask you questions first—about your business, your audience, and what matters most. The more it learns from you, the more authentic and useful the output will be.

Where AI Can Hurt

AI can generate words—but not necessarily connection.

Here’s where it still falls short:

  • It can’t match your tone without a lot of input.
  • It doesn’t understand emotion, nuance, or brand personality.
  • It often defaults to the business’s perspective, not the visitor’s.
  • It can sound polished—but still say nothing meaningful.

If your copy sounds smooth but forgettable, it’s not doing its job.

The Most Common Website Mistake (That AI Makes Worse)

Let’s clear something up: your website isn’t supposed to be about you. And, unfortunately, I see it ALL THE TIME! 🙁

But if you ask AI to write about everything you’re great at… guess what you’ll get?

A whole lot of “we do this” and “we offer that”—with zero connection to the person reading it. (And if you’re super passionate about what you do, chances are you’ve tried to say way more than necessary—I’m not talking from experience or anything… )

Here’s a better prompt to start with:

“What does my audience need to believe or understand before they take action?”

That shift changes everything.

Try This for Kicks: Ask AI to Roast Your Website

Want to see your site from a fresh perspective? Ask AI to roast it.

“Pretend you’re a blunt, no-nonsense UX expert. Visit [your website] and give me a roast. What’s confusing, boring, or unclear from a visitor’s perspective?”

You might cringe—but you’ll get insight you didn’t expect. Then ask:

“What should I fix first?”

Starting Small? Here’s What to Focus On

You don’t need a 10-page site to get started. In fact, less is more—especially if you’re DIYing. Focus on:

  • A single, well-structured page with clear navigation
  • Messaging that speaks to your audience’s needs, not just your services
  • A call to action that makes sense
  • Tools you’re comfortable with (However, I’ll always recommend WordPress for flexibility, control, and content ownership!)

Strong websites aren’t built by cramming in features. They’re built by guiding real people through a clear experience. When you combine Story, Style, and Strategy, you have accomplished a website that not only looks good, but also builds trust and converts to grow your business.

Final tip: Less is more. Focus on what’s essential, and always get an outside-in perspective.

Final Thought

AI isn’t going anywhere. But that doesn’t mean your website should sound or look like it was designed by a robot. On an internet flooded with auto-generated content, a real, human message cuts through now more than ever! Use AI to support your strategy—not replace it.
